Bishop Briggs sold out the Majestic as the final date of the Champion tour in celebration of her newest album Champion released early this month. Opening for Briggs was Detroit’s own Jax Anderson as well as direct support from Miya Folick.
Champion marks Briggs’ sophomore album, following Church of Scars released in 2018. Since releasing her debut album, the soulful indie singer has been known for her chart-rising single “River.”
Briggs opened with the title track of the album; a bright LED screen illuminated the stage, highlighting Briggs’ energetic figure as she danced around the stage.
Briggs noted that this was the final date of the tour, and that when she had heard it was in Detroit, she beamed with excitement. Her high hopes for the night were only confirmed by an enthusiastic crowd that sang her lyrics back to her as she broke into “Wild Horses.”
Briggs is an artist full of heart. One can easily see it as she giggles in between songs and radiates happiness on stage as she performs her work.
As a surprise for fans, Bishop lived out her “emo dream” as she nailed a mash-up of “Stressed Out” (Twenty One Pilots,) “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” (Panic! at the Disco) and “Welcome to the Black Parade” (MCR.)
Briggs performed a two song encore featuring “My Shine” and crowd favorite, “River.”
This date was special not only because it was the final stop of the tour, but it was hometown show for opener Jax Anderson. Anderson recently dropped the stage name Flint Eastwood.
“This is my first time playing in Detroit as myself and fuck it feels so good,” Anderson told the crowd. “So let’s end with a BANG!”
Anderson performed songs off of their latest EP, Heal which was released shortly following the show.
Anderson is someone any headliner could dream of having open their tour. Anderson’s energy with the crowd is ecstatic and makes for a memorable evening.
Miya Folick provided direct support for the Champion Tour. Her moody lyrics and soft tones were a change of pace from Anderson’s soulful vibe, but provided a nice transition to Briggs’ set.
Folick performed her two latest singles “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” and “Malibu Barbie” as well as tracks from her 2018 debut album Premonitions. Her bubbly personality shined through and she ran through the photo pit, interacting with fans at the barrier.
