With the most recent release of her fifth album Be The Cowboy via Dead Oceans, indie artist Mitski hit the road on another North American tour.

Mitski, short for Mitski Miyawaki was born in Japan, and traveled frequently until IMG_6380settling down in New York City for school. Her sense of identity shines through her lyricism. Her label debut Bury Me at Makeout Creek (2014) was followed by the Puberty 2, an album that landed her a spot on Billboard’s Top 20 independent and alternative charts.

Having spent the beginning of the year opening arena venues for Lorde, the chance to see her at The Magic Stick here in Detroit allowed a more intimate experience between her and her fans.

Overcoats (not pictured) opened up the night, their delicate sound entrapping the audience. The duo released their debut album Young last year. Their set included “Smaller Than My Mother” and “23” as well as their latest single “I Don’t Believe in Us”.

Mitski took the stage with her band shortly after. Her set started out with a single spotlight on her, creating an ambiance. The moody lighting for her entire set changed drastically per song which set emotion in the crowd.

She included many songs off of her most recent album Be the Cowboy, including IMG_6396“Remember My Name”, “A Pearl” and her leading Spotify chart “Nobody”.

She also included two songs from her 2013 album Retired from Sad, New Career in Business which was actually a school project as she majored in music. She performed “I Want You” and the closing song to her set “Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart.”

Mitski is on tour through December. You can find more dates and tickets here.
