In 2009, The Devil Wears Prada released easily one of their most iconic albums With Roots Above and Branches Below. This year, the band embarked on a small tour in celebration of the album’s ten year anniversary coming up.
The band did something unique with their set. Rather than starting with the celebrated album, the band performed a handful of other songs first. They opened with a cover of Julien Baker’s “Sour Breath”, and followed with “To the Key of Evergreen” off of their 2016 album Transit Blues.
Vocalist Mike Hranica was a whirlwind on stage, his screams ripping through the intricate instrumentals the band plays.
This quickly opened the pit, with crowd surfers arriving at the barrier every few moments. If there’s one thing that Prada doesn’t skimp in, it’s lighting. The dramatic, fast paced strobe lighting heightened the energy in the room.
Following the performance of With Roots Above and Branches Below in it’s entirety, the band performed a one song encore of “Mammoth.”
Fit for a King was the perfect direct support for this tour. The bands heavy tones set the mood for the rest of the night. Ryan Kirby’s vocal range is mind blowing. The biggest showcase of it being the iconic scream at the end of “Backbreaker.”
Even the opening band, ’68 provided an intense live performance. This two piece band consists of drummer Michael McClellan and vocalist/guitarist Josh Scogin. The theatrics these two bring to the stage are breathtaking, leaving fans a little confused maybe, but still amazed.
