December 5th, Trophy Eyes brought the American Dream tour to the Magic Stick in Detroit. The band was backed up by Seaway, Microwave, Can’t Swim and Michigan’s own Hot Mulligan.
It is always a treat to see Hot Mulligan playing local venues during tours like this. The band has such a strong stage presence and there is always someone in a banana costume lurking somewhere.
Everyone was riled up following Hot Mulligan, this worked in favor for Can’t Swim as they took the stage to play “Your Clothes.” Their set included some older tunes along with songs off of their recently released album This Too Won’t Pass. The new music paired well with the older work.
Microwave played an assortment of stuff from all their albums this night, following suit to the bands prior to them. The band recently released two singles early this fall, “Georgia on My Mind” and “keeping up.” I’m very excited to see more of what this band has in store in the near future.
After a short break, Seaway entered the stage to play a pop-punk filled set, starting with “Best Mistake.” They had one of the strongest stage presences out of all the bands that had played so far. Seaway has frequently stopped here in Michigan over the past year. The crowd was more than excited to welcome them back (yes the banana costume returned).
Austrailian native Trophy Eyes closed the night. They opened their set with “You Can Count On Me,” and the fans yelled every word back to them. The American Dream has received a wide array of praise from the pop-punk community. Their set included a majority of songs off the album including “Lavender Bay” and “More Like You.”
The first thing I noticed about their set-up on stage was how simple and bare it was. I soon found out they had this set-up because lead singer John Floreani loves to put on a full stage experience. Everything from high speed spins to extra high pop-punk jumps made for a high energy set.
The band did not forget any old favorites though and was sure to include a handful of songs off of their 2016 album Chemical Miracle. “Breath You In” and “Chlorine” received great fan reaction. The band closed their set with “I Can Feel It Calling.”
It was a long night but it was full of action and non-stop good vibes throughout the whole show. You can stream The American Dream here, and follow Trophy Eyes on Twitter to keep up to date with the band.
