Album Review: Marquette natives Charmer break into midwest scene with debut album

“I am highly anticipating the hype that Charmer is receiving and I cannot wait to see what this new album brings to them. They have created a very easy flowing body of work that is enjoyable for any mood.”
Marquette, MI natives Charmer has been breaking into the midwest”emo” scene with their extensive touring and highly anticipated release of their debut self-titled album.
The band recently joined No Sleep Records (Moose Blood, Hot Mulligan). Charmer was recorded with Jake Ewald of Modern Baseball. Ian Farmer, also of Modern Baseball, mastered the album.
There is a song that tailors itself to any listener on this album. They bring their own blend of “emo” music with very natural and organic drums from drummer Nicholas Erikson, and distinctive lyricism from vocalist David Daignault.
“Floral” is a track that definitely stands out. It has a sound similar to Tiny Moving Parts with the notable guitar sounds. The song contains some jams that will transition well into a live performance as well.
Another song that showcases Charmer’s unique ability with writing music is “Topanga Lawrence”. It was released as a single off of the album back in mid February. The bass really ties the song together, keeping every aspect and sound very crisp and flowing nicely. Another notable aspect of this song is the use of a horn, which was very refreshing to hear.
“Pretty Over College” is the second to last track on the album. It opens right up with acoustic vibes and smooth harmonies. The song brings a very positive and uplifting mood.
I am highly anticipating the hype that Charmer is receiving and I cannot wait to see what this new album brings to them. They have created a very easy flowing body of work that is enjoyable for any mood.
