Fans were treated to an intimate evening with Cigarettes After Sex at The Majestic Theatre. This was the bands first time playing in Detroit, causing high anticipation for their set.

The band released their debut self-titled album just last year, I discovered the band around this time and instantly became obsessed with all of their work.

The ambient noir-pop sound wrapped with the heavenly haunting tone of lead singer Greg Gonzalez’s voice covers a ground in music that captivates the listener.

With no supporting acts this evening, Greg Gonzalez and his bandmates made their way to the stage in the dusky theatre. The slow, almost romantic string music gave off an early 50’s vibe. The crowd fell silent as they took in the sound.

Opening their performance of the evening with “Truly” from Cigarettes After Sex, the hypnotic act began and would last until the last note of the evening.

The delicate rendition of REO Speedwagon’s “Keep On Loving You” followed. Cigarettes After Sex is a band that is hard to come by; they sound almost exactly the same live as they do recorded. This follows suit to the fact the band records their tracks live with very little dubs and editing.

Other songs included in their set were “K.”, “Each Time You Fall In Love”,”Sunsetz” and “Nothings Gonna Hurt You Baby”. The entire evening felt like a celebration of the band’s sound, and fans love for it.The set came to an end with one of my personal favorite tracks from the band, “Apocolypse”.

Once finished, the group walked off the stage and perhaps the only sound the crowd made that evening was their chant for “one more song”. The wish was granted when Gonzalez and his bandmates came out to top the evening off with “Dreaming of You”.

Cigarettes After Sex will be traveling across the globe for select tour dates in May. In addition, they will be on tour this October in support of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds for select dates in D.C., L.A. and Toronto.
