Derek Smith, former drummer for post-hardcore act Four Letter Lie, started his journey as hip hop artist MOD SUN eight years ago, producing and releasing his debut release, The Hippy Hop EP, and spreading his message of positive living through every release up to his most current release, BB.

MOD SUN kicked off his BB Tour last week, finding himself at The Shelter in Detroit on the third stop of the winter trek. In an interview prior to the show (you can find that here) he told me that this tour is the best tour of his entire fourteen year career as a touring musician.

And when he stepped on stage on Saturday, you could tell why he’s been selling out almost every venue that he’s played in the last few months.

Running onto the stage like a man with a purpose, MOD immediately got right into the face of the front row of screaming young adults, immediately bringing the venue into a frenzy of screaming lyrics and screaming girls.

A proponent of living life to the fullest (see “All Night, Every Night” or “We Do This Shit”) MOD broke out a gallon size bottle of Jack Daniels and started chugging it before playing the latter.

Later in the set, MOD hopped behind the drum kit set up on stage and showed off his talents as the drummer he was in his past projects before continuing to perform songs off the array of releases spanning the last eight years.

A highlight of the show, was when MOD played what I guess would be called a ballad, but had prior started a FaceTime call with his famous girlfriend Bella Thorne. This alone sent the crowd into euphoria.

Fans definitely got what they paid for from this show, and I truly enjoyed attending and photographing this very entertaining and interesting artist. My very insightful conversation with MOD SUN before the show was a highlight on the night for me, as I truly am not familiar with any of his new music.
