State Champs – The Fillmore -3.2.19
After accompanying Fall Out Boy on select dates of the MANIA tour, pop punk band State Champs have seemingly taken over the lighter rock scene. The band is currently on tour in celebration of their most recent album Living Proof.
Their stop here in Detroit was sold out, and the line was wrapped far around the building with fans braving the cold in order to be in the pit for their favorite band.
Opening the evening was Grayscale. The Philadelphia natives form a pop-punk sound that was on brand for the tour. Vocalist Collin Walsh was back and forth on stage, while still taking a moment to pause and grip the mic.
The band opened with “Atlantic” off of their most recent album Adornment. Their set mostly included songs off this album, however they were sure to include “Palette” off of What We’re Missing.
Reunited with Hopeless Records, The Dangerous Summer released their first album since 2013 in 2018. The self titled album was warmly welcomed by fans. On tour with State Champs, the band’s genuine happiness radiated on stage. They opened their set with “The Permanent Rain” off of their 2009 album Reach for the Sun. Their set also included their most recent single “Where Were You When the Sky Opened Up?”
Our Last Night was a nice switch in genre for the tours line up. The band is well known for their “punk goes pop” styled covers, which they were sure to include in their set with a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.”
However, their original music is what truly showcases their talent. Their set opened with their most recent single “Bury the Hatchet,” preparing the crowd for a heavier set. Vocalist Trevor Wentworth was nonstop on stage, playing up the crowds energy as he bounced around.
Finally, State Champs opened their set with “Criminal,” one of the leading singles off of Living Proof.
Bassist Ryan Scott Graham is a Michigan native, making the Detroit date of the tour special for the band. Graham was full of smiles on stage, singing the lyrics back to the crowd.
State Champs performed an impressive twenty song set without missing a beat. They included a healthy dose of tracks from Around the World and Back including “All You Are is History.”
Things slowed down a bit while vocalist Derek DiScanio serenaded the crowd with an acoustic rendition of “If I’m Lucky” which lead seamlessly into a full band for “Our Time to Go.”
The band closed their set with “Secrets” causing the crowd to go nuts, screaming back every word.
