Pop punk icon Sum 41 has been touring across North America in celebration of the 15 year anniversary of their 2002 studio album Does This Look Infected?.
The album contains pop punk favorites such as “Still Waiting”, “The Hell Song” and “Over My Head (Better Off Dead). Celebrating the album with them was original guitarist Dave “Brownsound” Baksh.
The bands stop in Pontiac, MI at The Crofoot Ballroom was sold out weeks before the show date, leaving fans in high anticipation for this set.
Kicking off the evening was SuperWhatevr. The band started off as a project for Orange County, CA native Skyler McKee, which quickly took off after the release of the debut EP Good Luck in 2016.
Their set opened with “Telelelevision” off of their 2018 debut album Never Nothing. An album that embodies the struggle, and the outcome of dealing with tough personal issues. Other songs included in the set were “Bloomfield” and “Misquote”.
Afterwords, pop punk band Seaway came on stage to a roar of applause from the room. Opening with their song “Best Mistake”, fans quickly began singing along with vocalist Ryan Locke.
The band filled their set with songs off of their 2017 album Vacation such as “Scatter My Ashes Along the Coast, or Don’t” and “Something Wonderful”.
Seaway included a cover of The Vines’ “Get Free” to fan’s surprise. After “Car Seat Magazine” the band closed their set with “Lula on the Beach” as crowd surfers swarmed the barrier.
Finally, after a montage of rock hits, Sum 41 opened their set with “The Hell Song”. At that moment, the entire venue shook as fans jumped, moshed and sang along. Vocalist Deryck Whibley assured the crowd that rather than just playing the album in it’s track order as many anniversary shows do, the set list would proceed to look like it would 15 years ago including songs off of other albums.
Since the release of the album in 2002, Does This Look Infected? has been certified Platinum in Canada and Japan, Gold in the United States and Silver in the UK. This was proven as fans sang along to favorites such as “All Messed Up”, “No Brains” and “Thanks for Nothing”.
In addition to the tracks off of Does This Look Infected?, the band included “Fake My Own Death” off of their most recent album 13 Voices. Sum 41 also covered Queen’s “We Will Rock You” in which the entire venue seemed to scream along.
Drummer Frank Zummo showed off his skills during a drum solo to a Linkin Park medley. Following, the band broke into the intro to “Another Brick in the Wall” which flowed into “Billy Spleen”.
After an extended outro to “Hooch”, the band broke into a three song encore that included “No Reason”, Motivation” and a bang of confetti for “Fat Lip”. However, that wasn’t the end of the celebration. Sum 41 joined the after party of Emo Nite LA upstairs in the Pike Room to jam iconic emo hits.
The tour continues through the end of May. You can stream 13 Voices here, and follow the band on Facebook for more updates.
